How To: Choose a Stove Flashing Kit

So you've chosen your woodburning stove, and you're getting ready to fit it into your bell tent, cabin, or tipi. To fit the flue out through your tent wall or shed roof, you'll need to choose a stove flashing kit. We've got lots of options so that we can provide the right kit for every adventurer, so here's a handy guide to help you choose the right one.

What is a flashing kit?

A flashing kit is a silicone collar that comes in a kit with either metal rings (for canvas tents) or a silicone fixing kit (for sheds, vans and solid roofs). Essentially, it's what allows you to fit a stove flue out through a roof, whether it's a soft canvas roof or a solid one. The orange silicone is heatproof up to 600º, so it can withstand the heat of the flue. Once you've got your flashing kit, fitting it is really easy: it only takes 10 minutes and we provide clear step-by-step instructions for you to follow. It might seem nerve-wracking cutting a hole in your beautiful bell tent, but we've never had a customer do it wrong! If you're still stuck, feel free to contact us and we'll get you sorted.

I've got a...

Frontier Stove

We have three options for the Frontier Stove: the Frontier Stove Tent Flashing Kit, the Frontier Stove Shed Flashing Kit, and the Frontier Stove Tipi Sleeve. Nice and easy! Frontier Stove Tent Flashing Kit: perfect if you're using the Frontier Stove in a bell tent, yurt, or other canvas tent where you'll be cutting a hole and fitting the flue through the canvas. Frontier Stove Shed Flashing Kit: for using the Frontier Stove in a shed, porch, or other solid-roofed structure. Frontier Stove Tipi Sleeve: designed for the Frontier Stove when used in a tipi tent with a pre-fitted hole at the top. Remember that the tipi sleeve adds 40cm of height to the flue.

Why do you only have two flashing kits for the Frontier Stove, when there are lots of different options for the Frontier Plus, Traveller and Fintan? Because the Frontier flue is smaller, that means the flashing kit is made up of less silicone and is more flexible, so the 'flat' flashing can be used on 45º angles like a bell tent roof. The larger flues require a silicone collar that's been molded to the correct angle.

Frontier Plus

There are four different options for the Frontier Plus, plus a tipi kit. For tents and canvas: 4" Tent 45º Flashing Kit: for bell tents and other canvas tents with a pitched or angled roof 4" Yurt Flashing Kit: for yurts and other tents with a flat roof (up to 30º angle) For sheds, cabins, vans and other spaces with solid roofs: 4" Shed 45º Flashing Kit: for solid roofs at a 45º angle 4" Shed Flashing Kit: for flat solid roofs, suitable up to an angle of 30º For tipi tents with a pre-fitted flue hole: Frontier Plus Tipi Kit

Traveller Stove

These flashings are for the Traveller Stove OR the Fintan Stove if it is used with 4-inch/100mm single-walled flue. If you are using 5-inch/125mm flue, or insulated 4-inch/100mm flue you'll need the next section. The silicone flashing kit options for the Traveller Stove are all the same as the Frontier Plus, although you'll get a different set of instructions (this is because of the slight variation in flue size between the Frontier Plus and Traveller, which makes a difference to the size you cut the flashing kit to). The Traveller Stove has its own tipi kit, which comes with a complete flue system (total flue length 171cm). If you're using the Traveller Stove in a tipi tent, then opt for the Traveller Tipi Flue Kit. You can also add extra sections if you need more height.

For tents and canvas: 4" Tent 45º Flashing Kit: for bell tents and other canvas tents with a pitched or angled roof 4" Yurt Flashing Kit: for yurts and other tents with a flat roof (up to 30º angle) For sheds, cabins, vans and other spaces with solid roofs: 4" Shed 45º Flashing Kit: for solid roofs at a 45º angle 4" Shed Flashing Kit: for flat solid roofs, suitable up to an angle of 30º For tipi tents with a pre-fitted flue hole: Traveller Tipi Flue Kit Traveller Tipi Flue Kit Extra Section

Fintan Stove

With 4-inch/100mm single-walled flue: The flashing kit options will be exactly the same as the Traveller Stove options above. You'll be using an adaptor to take the Fintan down to a 4-inch flue.

With 4-inch/100mm insulated flue: For tents and canvas roofs at all angles: 4" Insulated Flue Tent Flashing Kit For sheds, cabins, vans and other spaces with solid roofs at all angles: 4″ Insulated Flue Shed Flashing Kit

With 5-inch/100mm single-walled flue: For tents and canvas roofs at all angles: 4" Insulated Flue Tent Flashing Kit (the outer diameter diameter of 100mm insulated is the same as 125mm single-walled). For sheds, cabins, vans and other spaces with solid roofs at all angles: 4″ Insulated Flue Shed Flashing Kit (the outer diameter diameter of 100mm insulated is the same as 125mm single-walled).

With 5-inch/100mm insulated flue: In most cases, when you're using a 5-inch insulated flue, you'll be installing it in a house, shed or solid roofed-structure, and not in a tent, so we've only got one option. For solid roofs: 5" Insulated Flue Flashing Kit Now you know which kit you need, check out our flashing kit INSTALLATION GUIDE for full instructions!
